The first time I visited South Fork, I was nine months old. We stayed at Big Meadows. My family made more memories in South Fork than I could count. I'm 39 now, and have already taken my wife and little ones there for summer vacations. I think we're going to try Fun Valley this year. I'm looking forward to it, and hope that my kids build the same great memories there that I have.

Loved The Rio Grande Club. Great golf course. Here's what I read in www.coloradogolfbible.com: RIO GRANDE CLUB It's a long way from the Denver area, but anyone who makes the long trip here and plays the Rio Grande Club might just want to stay. Nature, solitude and great views make this a must-play. It was 1999 when developers first eluded longhorns on the B.A.R. Ranch and Redstones Ric Buckton envisioned fairways along the Rio Grande River and up in the higher terrain that borders the Rio Grande National Forest and Adler Creek. Dow Finsterwald, Colorado Golf Hall of Famer, is a spokesman for the club. He says you can't resist world-class golf, Gold Medal fishing and outstanding skiing 20 minutes away at Wolf Creek -- calling this is the club for all seasons. It measures 7,155 from the back tees, includes Rio Grande River access for fishing and has 7.5 miles of cart path winding through towering Ponderosa pines, scrub oak and aspens, creating views at every turn. No. 1 has an 80-foot tee-shot drop to the fairway and a stone wall complete with chimney-rock formation running down the entire right side. The next few holes are traditional golf in an open meadow, passing only wetlands and ponds before reaching the stretch of Rio Grande that's part of the club. Nos. 3 through 8 dance along the spectacular river. You will like the par-3, 193-yard No. 6 requiring a forced carry over the rambling waters. The 14th could be the best photo op, though as Alder Creek circles around it, giving this 207-yarder a target look. If you hit it weak or crooked you will be wet. No. 18 is downhill big-time, a 572-yard par 5. The green is guarded by a 2.5-acre lake and it is tough to hit if you draw a downhill lie. The San Juan Mountains provide the backdrop for the log-cabin styled clubhouse. This building is huge and features a dining room and lounge, spa-fitness facilities, conference rooms, business center, pro shop and locker rooms. Driving range, practice chipping area and practice putting green are also on-site. The details 719-873-1995. 0285 Rio Grande Trail, South Fork, CO 81154.

My family and I vacationed in Southfork at the Lonesome Dove Cabins back in March of 2000. This was our first look at "real" snow! The kids were small then so we didn't ski but we watched and drove the Silver Thread Highway which we call "The Highway to Heaven". This is most beautiful place I have ever been and I plan on visiting again some day.

I have been going to SF for 40 years (42 years young now). The best thing about South Fork is that it is so far from any major cities, it remains for the most part unchanged. No surprises on this vacation spot, relaxing with plenty of outdoor activities. We had a good 10 years of family reunions in SF. I remember catching salamanders under logs at Shaw Lake, fireflies in the evening, ice cream cones in Creede, bear traps on the road to Beaver, trout fishing galore and the weekly fish fries. My dad passed away last year but our memories in South Fork remain....
