Location : South Fork Visitor Center
For mushroom enthusiasts and wanna-be mushroom enthusiasts. Get quick tips regarding the proper way to identify and collect mushrooms from an expert and then head out for a nearby hike to look for and collect mushroom species. Once all of the mushrooms have been collected, the participants return to the Visitor Center for identification and discussion of what was discovered.
We have a local Mushroom expert, Roger Dawson who has led the foray many years. Bring lunch, be prepared to spend the day in the mountains. We will drive our own cars collect mushrooms and discuss them back at the Visitor Center.
WHAT IT IS: If you are looking for something different to do, come join us for our Mushroom Foray! This is a unique adventure in the Rio Grande National Forest, where you will learn how to identify and hunt for mushrooms.
WHEN IT IS: The same agenda is planned for both days, so adventurers need only to sign up for one day or the other. However, if you are a “mushroom nut,” you are more than welcome to participate both days.
HOW IT WORKS: Both days start at 8:30 AM, with an introduction on at South Fork Visitor Center that Includes some quick tips regarding the proper way to identify and collect mushrooms. The group will then travel to a designated area to look for and collect mushroom species. Once all of the mushrooms have been collected, the participants will go back to the Visitor Center for identification on and discussion.
HOW TO SIGN UP: The registration on fee for this event is $20.00 per person/per day or $35.00 for both days. Please remember that we are limiting each day to a maximum of 25 people, so sign up early! To register, call the South Fork Visitor Center: (719) 873-5512
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: Participants will receive handouts, including tips on how to collect and look for mushrooms, plus several recipes to try with their newly found fungi. We will also have mushroom guides available for pre-purchase.
